King David writes in Psalms 139, “O LORD, you have searched me, and you know me" Exposing us to the fundamental truth that God knows every detail of our lives, our hearts, and our pains. He knows our plans, problems, petitions and even the paths we intend to take before we even take them. The Bible is filled with instances where each individual having a divine encounter with the Lord was ultimately led to receive His intervention, comfort, and guidance in their lives. Let's explore how this understanding of God about us can deepen our faith and get us closer in our walk with God.
1. God Knows Our Hearts
1 Samuel 16:7 - But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
When God chose David to be king, He didn't look at the outward appearances as Samuel did. God saw David's heart. Despite being the youngest and seemingly least significant, David was chosen because God knew his heart was aligned with His purposes. This reminds us that God sees our true selves, our intentions, and our character.
Also, consider Solomon. When he asked God for wisdom instead of wealth or long life, God saw his genuine desire to serve others. Pleased with Solomon's selflessness, God not only granted him unparalleled wisdom but also blessed him with riches and honor (1 Kings 3:5-14). Being the maker of our body, soul and mind, He recognizes and rewards each of our sincere desires and motives.
2. God Knows Our Minds
Psalm 139:2 - You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.
Psalm 139 beautifully expresses that God knows our thoughts even before they are formed. This assures us that God understands our innermost fears, hopes, and struggles.
In the New Testament, we see this with Nathanael. When Philip brought Nathanael to Jesus, Jesus said, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit” (John 1:47). Astonished, Nathanael asked how Jesus knew him. Jesus replied that He saw Nathanael under the fig tree before Philip called him, revealing His knowledge of Nathanael’s character and thoughts (John 1:48-49). This encounter highlights God’s intimate understanding of our minds and reinforces that He knows us completely, at all times.
3. God Knows Our Pain
Exodus 3:7 - The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering.”
The depth to which the Lord knows our pain is truly unfathomable. The story of the Israelites and the bondage they faced in Egypt reveals the extent to which God heard and answered to the cries of His people. The agony and suffering faced by the Israelites prompted God to send Moses and deliver them. This just shows that God is not only deeply aware of our pain, but also responds to every tear we shed.
By knowing that the Lord fully sees us and recognizes every little emotion that we feel, we can rest peacefully and in the assurance that He is more than faithful to deliver us from everything that troubles us.
In the New Testament, Jesus demonstrated this compassion repeatedly and in unique fashion to everyone who looked towards Him for help. He even reached out to those that didn’t even know Him and touched their hearts with His Love. One moving example is when He raised Lazarus from the dead. Jesus wept with Mary and Martha, sharing in their sorrow before performing the miracle (John 11:33-35). This act of empathy and grace shows us that Jesus not only knew their pain but felt it deeply, affirming that God is intimately aware of all our sufferings. Not only does He know them, but He waits for us to call unto His name so that we can be saved.
Besides understanding our hearts, discerning our thoughts, and feeling our pain, God assures us that we are never alone. He doesn’t just see us on the inside but mends our hearts and heals us.
